CRMC 2010 Season Review

2010 was scheduled to be a solo year, breaking in the 500 cc Manx Norton acquired in 2009 and rebuilt over the winter.
Sorting out the bits that kept working loose and the oil leaks from an engine design that was apparently very rarely oil-tight was taking some time.
In May just before Darley Moor, Clive Faulkner , came looking for a sidecar passenger.
We had so much fun we decided to go for the rest of the season together and finally ended up 7th in the club Period 3 sidecar championship.
Darley Moor, Knockhill, East Fortune (the SCRMC Bob McIntyre meeting), Donington Park, Snetterton and Cadwell Park all provided a great deal of fun and excitement with a best result of 4th place at Snetterton in September.
Occasional outings on the Manx and Ducati Sebring filled in at occasional meetings to make it a fairly busy year.

2008 Race Report-Winning (occasionally) on the 350 cc Ducati

For 2008, the CRMC introduced a Group 2 championship for 350cc single cylinder motorcycles (racing bikes based on modified road machines).
The supporting argument being that however much money you spend on such a machine it will never compete with pukka motorcycles built especially for GPs. Not 100% true if you have an exceptional rider on a well developed machine but generally correct. Our Ducati is such a machine and with only one DNF during the year (due to a racing incident!!!) we managed to actually win the season long championship.
The season was helped/hindered by almost every race being run in the rain or with wet tracks.
A 6th place in the open 350cc Race of the Year at Brands Hatch (also in the wet) brought as much pleasure.

2007 Race Report, Racing a 1966 OHC Ducati Sebring

An interesting year riding the four stroke Ducati, after some years on two strokes.
No appreciable power band just acres of torque from almost zero to maximum revolutions.
And reliability, apart from two technical problems ( one a minor oil leak) the bike just kept going. Best result was 7th in the Race of the Year and 9th in the 350cc CRMC championship.

Bike specifications:-
Ducati Sebring 1966\67, single cylinder 4 stroke, overhead camshaft. Power output around 36hp. (Dyno).
Gibson high level exhaust system.
Rev counter by Scitsu.
Standard frame, Ceriani front forks, Falcon lightweight rear shocks.
Avon racing tyres.
Engine prepared by Lacey Engineering, single plug head.
Nova Engineering close ratio gearbox and primary drive gears.
Lightweight clutch.

Racing the Harris TZ 350 in 2006

2006 was a year of ups and downs, entry numbers for the class were pretty healthy and mid-field placings were the order of the day.
At the end of the year 10th in the Club championship matches 2005 for consistency.
The Harris needed extensive cleaning and minor repair after a trip during practice into the gravel at the bottom of paddock hill at Brands
Hatch when a 750cc Yamaha immediately in front decided to break its gear box and deposit the oil over the back wheel. As I was about 2 feet
behind it, the options were to go over the bike or the rider who were gyrating around the track. Final option was the gravel trap which stone
blasted the fairings and other parts. Rider shaken but unbroken!!!!!
The Cotton Telstar was brought out for the meeting at Oulton Park and promptly siezed the gearbox removing teeth from 4 gears. Needless to say
the bike stopped dead in the middle of the Hislop chicane and I proceeded to fly through the screen, knees and elbows were sore for a few weeks but
fortunately nothing broken. The Harris has now been sold to a younger (and probably quicker) rider and construction on a replacement Spondon Yamaha is
underway. A trip to the Bob Mac meeting at East Fortune without a solo resulted in a ride on Dave Smith’s big wheeled Triumph sidecar outfit and a
Trophy for third place in class over the weekend.

Racing the Harris TZ 350 in 2005

Six CRMC meetings completed in 2005. A total of 18 races, 16 finishes, 2 non starts due to mechanical problems. One overheating problem due to a water leak and one due to the engine requiring replacement piston rings. Finally around half way through the year I began to understand how to drive a racing two stroke twin and lap times started to reduce quite noticeably. With timing transponders fitted it is possible to download off the web every lap time completed over the year so details of one’s progress (or otherwise) is now very easy to see. Best finish during the was 6th place in class and at the end of the year a 10th place in the championship. At the age of 59, I am never going to win a championship!!!!! However, it is a lot of fun.
The Cotton Telstar was brought out for the meeting at Lydden Hill and promptly took two teeth off both fifth gears. Modern replacements are currently on order.

Second half of 2004-a belated report;

Croft
A fine weekend in the north east resulted in two fifths and a sixth place in class over the weekend.

Lydden Hill.
The Yamaha ran okay but the rider couldn’t get to grips with this circuit despite changing the gear ratios a number of times in the hope of finding something that suited. Two sixths and a seventh place were a reasonable reward for the lacklustre lap times.

Snetterton
Now running in fourth place in the class championship, hoping to consolidate this with some solid finishes.
No such luck, as I had a small coming together with a Group 2 rider who accidentally clipped the Yamaha front wheel going through Corams ( a fairly quick corner) which resulted in a trip down the road ripping all the controls off the right hand side of the bike. That was race one so a slightly bruised rider spent the rest of the weekend spectating.

Cadwell Park.
Back to Lincolnshire for the last meeting of the season.
Race one –first outing since the “off” at Snetterton and the throttle stuck open going on to Park straight, okay, but not looking forward to the same happening at any of Cadwells many slow corners I pulled off to make adjustments.
Race 2- somewhat better
Race 3 Race of the Year-a wet and cold race, made a hash of the start and everybody disappeared round Charleys before the Yamaha struck up properly. Some progress made in the wet before finishing 11th in class .

Final result in the Group 1 championship was eighth place amongst a gaggle of riders all on TZ Yamahas. So quite pleased with my first year on this bike. Certainly the fifteen year difference in design between this and the Cotton Telstar resulted in a lot more racing miles than in 2003.

Classic racing report 2004 -24th May 24, 2004
Round One:
Easter weekend at Pembrey, South Wales.
A wet and cold Good Friday practice day resulted in three broken collar bones and other minor injuries for a number of people caught out by cold tyres and early season exuberance. Fortunately the weather improved for racing on the Saturday and Sunday.
The TZ350 Harris Yamaha proved to be satisfactory after its winter rebuild:- 3 starts, 3 finishes and three third places!!!!!. Very satisfactory.!!

On to Mallory Park for Bank holiday Monday, only one long race for the Post Classic bikes at this one day meeting. After a very wet practice the sun shone nicely for us so a dry race. Unfortunately a slight mechanical problem left me tail-end Charlie at the end of the first lap. Sorting the problem during the first lap allowed the Yamaha to run properly resulting in a 7th place finish out of 13 in class, so another few championship points to add to those acquired at Pembrey.

A return to Brands Hatch after a four year absence produced some excellent weather for racing.
This time the Yamaha let me down and a broken water pump drive resulted in only a couple of laps during the Saturday. This was fixed for the single long race on the Sunday and another finish.
Result: 8th –could do better!!! But with no practice on a strange circuit, well.??????

Brians' Racing Report for 2003.
This year can summed up in a couple of paragraphs:-
Racing with the Cotton- What racing? Despite fitting a belt primary drive and doing a lot of careful preparation last winter the thing never finished a race all year (from about 20 starts.) Some meetings it never got past practice!!!!!!! Always gearbox and transmission problems, The handling is a bit queer too, but it never ran long enough to sort this out. Still there is always next year!!??
So -out with the Yamaha TZ350G. This provided a lot of interesting racing, although it is taking me some time to get used to the speeds its capable of . Especially good fun was the Classic Bike weekend on the full formula one circuit at Spa Franchorchamps in Belgium. This really must be one of the best race tracks in the world.
Didn't bother with the Cotton (I was saving it so it could break down at Jehonville!) but the TZ proved the ideal tool for some fast laps on this fantastic circuit.

Other highlights
Three first places out of three starts on the chair of Eddy Toombs Period one sidecar at Cadwell Park.

Doing something in excess of 150mph down the Hangar Straight at Silverstone, and passing a 500cc GP four cylinder Suzuki on the start and finish straight.

The season finished with a bang, by my falling off the Yamaha in front of all my supporters at around 5mph
in the new (but very stupid) chicane at Silverstone.
